An Item of Supporting Evidence

  1. AN ITEM OF SUPPORTING EVIDENACE - scratchboard drawing, size 8.5 x 11. It appears in the book, "The Compleat Crow'" by Brian Lumley, published by Ganley in 1987.

If I were able to add sound to this drawing I would dub in the "Wilhelm scream" for the soldier who is caught in the grip of the monster's left hand. It's quite frightening, the Wilhelm scream, I'm sure you've heard it somewhere. I heard about the scream from my son Stephen while we were dining at a restaurant . . .

We were waiting for our meals to be served, and Stephen asked me, "Dad, did you ever hear of the 'Wilhelm' scream?" I answered, "No, what is it?" He took a sip of the beer he was drinking and as he lowered the glass he said, "In the 1951 western film, 'Distant Drums' there is a scene in which an actor screams when attacked by an alligator. The scream was dubbed in, it is credited to actor-singer 'Sheb Wooley' who had a talent for screaming. It was recorded and is now part of filmdom's 'Sound Effects' library. But oddly, it is not known as "The Sheba Wooly Scream". He paused to take another sip of beer and then continued, "And that's because . . .

In the 1953 western film, 'The Charge at Feather River,' a character in the film, private 'Wilhelm,' is on horseback and screams when he is shot in the leg by an Indian arrow. The scream was dubbed in using the Sheb Wooley scream from the Sound Effects Library. But, ever since then it has erroneously been called, 'The Wilhelm Scream'." Our waiter interrupted to ask Steve if he wanted another glass of beer, and after Steve replied, "No thanks," he went on to add . . .

"It's become a fun-thing with some of filmdom's sound effects people, they have used it in over 200 Movie and Television films, including the Star Wars and Indiana Jones pictures, Batman Returns, Toy Story, Planet of the Apes, and Pirates of the Caribbean. You can hear it from your computer, Dad. Just go to your Web Search cell and type in 'The Wilhelm Scream,' and from the list of websites that appear select one that features a recording of the Scream." And that's what I did when I got home.
